Dermatology Faculty – General Dermatology Position Description

The Division of Dermatology in the John T. Milliken Department of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine is accepting nominations and applications for the full-time position of General Dermatologist in St. Louis, Missouri. The clinical Dermatologist will join an active and growing academic division that is fully supported by the Division Chief, leadership team, and support staff. The Dermatology Division has an exceptional legacy that dates to the earliest history of the Siteman Cancer Center in the late 1800s. In 1954, Dermatology became a separate division and has continued to grow and flourish as an integral part of the School of Medicine. Today, the Division of Dermatology offers multiple sub-specialties, a highly ranked residency program as well as ACGME-accredited fellowships in procedural dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and dermatopathology. The division also has research-track residency training through an NIH-sponsored physician-scientist training program.

Position Summary:

The objective of this position is to expand access to general dermatology practice in the community and continue to provide excellent patient care and excellent educational opportunities to residents. Additionally, the Dermatologist will drive referrals to our dermatopathology service line and Mohs practice. Stabilize our financial status and reinvest in key areas of our practice. This position will be 100% general practice with option to tailor to interests. Research and educational/teaching opportunities can be arranged depending upon candidate interest. With the appropriate experience, the Dermatologist may have the opportunity to be a site director should a new community site be developed.

The Dermatology Faculty member will be clinical, 7-9 half day sessions as full-time clinician. Faculty with research, education, or administrative interests will be considered for additional protected time. Faculty member may have the ability to add mid-level providers under their clinical practice.  

Reports to: The successful candidate for the General Dermatology Faculty Position reports to, and will work closely with, the Division Chief of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Lynn Cornelius.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides general Dermatology services in clinic and academic settings.
  • Provides consultation services for in-patients, after-hour’s coverage as per departmental agreement, as well as potential for telemedicine or tele-consult services at BJC facilities.
  • Participates in providing medical services for patients at:
    • Off-site adult general dermatology practice which includes an extensive Mohs suite.
    • Off-site pediatric dermatology practice.
    • Academic-based general dermatology, Mohs suite and pediatric practices at WUSM.
    • Off-site Veterans Health Administration outpatient general dermatology clinic.
  • Provide education in Dermatology to residents in clinical setting, Grand Rounds, and lectures.
  • Adheres to institutional and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Occasional Duties:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Commitment to a high standard of integrity and professionalism.

  • Knowledge and skill in curriculum design and implementation.
  • Knowledge and skill in the delivery of medical education.
  • Competence in the use of electronic health records, learning management systems, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and other technology and programs necessary for the delivery of medical education at MCOM.
  • Clinical proficiency in area of specialization.

Required Professional Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree required.
  • Board Certified or Board eligible by American Board of Dermatology.
  • Missouri state medical license or eligibility for medical licensure in the state of Missouri.
  • Qualifications for faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Open to faculty of all levels of seniority.
  • Where Applicable- Employee shall be currently board certified in his or her specialty or demonstrate active pursuit of board certification as defined by the appropriate specialty board of the American Board of Medical Specialties or the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) year experience or one (1) year related experience in Dermatology.
  • Academic clinical experience as a core faculty member in a medical school or health sciences center.
  • A cross-cutting focus on rural health, underserved populations, and health disparities is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, commitment to diversity, well-developed emotional intelligence, and ability to collaborate across the Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, its hospital affiliates, and public and private clinics to operationally improve the clinical care we provide in conjunction with peers and staff management; embodies a strong commitment to teaching and working in an academic environment.
