Division Chief of Endocrinology Description

The Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine, ranked among the Top 50 U.S. Medical Schools by U.S. News & World Report, is seeking a dynamic leader with strong credentials in clinical medicine and basic, translational or clinical research to serve as the Endocrinology Division Chief in the Department of Medicine. The successful candidate will embody academic stature, accomplished clinical skills, and leadership and management skills to build and expand all aspects of Endocrinology Medicine at UCI, while advancing the research and educational activities of the training program. The Division Chief will be a well-rounded physician who will nurture innovation and advance technological developments and treatment methods that will ultimately improve the health of our patients. This is a tenure/tenure-track, or Clinical of Medicine senate faculty position at the Associate/Full Professor level. Academic credentials including NIH or other federal grants and prior record of high impact publications are preferred.

The Division of Endocrinology is committed to providing exceptional care for patients with a broad range of complex endocrine conditions through well-funded clinical training, research, and educational programs. Faculty members are experts in the diagnosis and management of diabetes, thyroid disease, pituitary dysfunction, osteoporosis, adrenal disease, and other conditions. Faculty also manage difficult-to-treat disorders of lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides), obesity, male infertility, and calcium. The division has extensive experience with pediatric endocrinology and offers diagnostic services and treatment plans for young patients with glandular disorders, Turner’s syndrome, ambiguous genitalia, and precocious or delayed puberty.

As part of Orange County’s only academic medical center, the division’s goal is to advance new treatment strategies and targeted therapies for patients with endocrine conditions. These board-certified physicians are exposed to the latest science and research in endocrinology. In fact, UCI is home to one of 50 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers and holds a NIH Clinical Translational Science Award.


The Endocrinology Division Chief will be expected to deliver patient care in an academic setting, teach medical students, residents, fellows, engage in an independent and extramurally – funded clinical research program, and provide service to the University. Additionally, the Division Chief will continue to build the clinical activities and philanthropic efforts of the program and bring a strong research component to the division. Candidates with current funding are preferred, but candidates who apply for funding once hired will be considered.

The incumbent will be expected to perform a combination of the following duties:

Criteria for the Professor of Line Series:

  • Academic credentials including NIH or other federal grants and prior record of high impact publications are preferred.
  • Direct patient care conduct and substantial and meaningful research.
  • Teach residents and medical students.
  • Perform public and University services.

Excellent teaching is an essential criterion for appointment in this series. Priority will be given to candidates with a proven track record of academic productivity, as demonstrated through high-impact publications, thematic-based research, and/or grant funding.

Criteria for the Professor of Clinical “X” Series:
The incumbent will be expected to direct patient care conduct, substantial and meaningful research; teach residents and medical students; and perform public and University service.


The successful applicant should possess:

  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. required.
  • Board-certified/eligible in field of Endocrinology.
  • Active and unrestricted California Medical License or eligibility for California Medical Licensure.
  • Rank and academic track will be commensurate with candidate training, qualifications, and experience.


  • A strong record of research and funding, including NIH and/or other federal awards and a prior record of high impact publications are preferred.
  • Excellent leadership and clinical skills.
  • Interest in clinical teaching.

Salary and academic rank for this position will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and academic background.
