{"id":1755,"date":"2013-10-07T11:29:25","date_gmt":"2013-10-07T16:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kbicblog.com\/blog\/academic-medicine\/?page_id=1755"},"modified":"2016-04-28T14:21:11","modified_gmt":"2016-04-28T19:21:11","slug":"general-interview-tips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kbicblog.com\/academic-medicine\/candidate-corner\/general-interview-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Interview Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Arrive early.<\/strong> \u00a0Plan to arrive for your interview 10-15 minutes early. \u00a0If you arrive earlier than that, go for a\u00a0walk, get a cup of coffee, drive around the block, or sit in the lobby. \u00a0Arriving too early may create an awkward situation and arriving late definitely creates a bad first impression. \u00a0Be sure to ask for directions when making arrangements for the interview and always allow enough time for bad traffic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dress professionally.<\/strong> \u00a0Your interview attire should be appropriate for the position for which you are applying. \u00a0If you are unsure, choose conservative dress. \u00a0In most cases, business suits are appropriate for both men and women. \u00a0Carry a briefcase, portfolio notepad or manila folder. \u00a0Bring extra resumes, list of references and a list of questions you need to ask.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be yourself. <\/strong>\u00a0Your personality and background may appeal to some employers and not to others. \u00a0It is to your advantage to be yourself, rather than try to mold yourself to fit an image you think will appeal to an employer. \u00a0After all, you want to find a position and employer that is compatible with &#8216;who you are&#8217; and your career objectives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sell yourself!<\/strong> \u00a0Six out of ten people don&#8217;t get the\u00a0job they want because they don&#8217;t sell themselves. \u00a0Be prepared to market your skills and experiences as they relate to the job described. \u00a0\u00a0Be self-confident and positive in describing your abilities to do the job. \u00a0Convince the employer that you are the right person for the job and that you can help the employer solve some of their problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Answering the <i>Tell me about yourself question<\/i>.<\/strong> \u00a0Eight out of ten interviews begin with this question. Respond by illustrating how your interests and skills relate to the position and how your experiences and background would enable you to contribute to the position and organization. \u00a0Spend about 90 seconds to two minutes highlighting your experiences while providing a focused answer. You may want to start out with personal information, then focus on academic experiences and professional experiences, and conclude with the reasons why you are\u00a0interested in the position.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use examples whenever possible.<\/strong> \u00a0Just stating your skills and strengths is not enough. \u00a0You must demonstrate how you have successfully applied them. \u00a0Be sure to give complete answers to questions. \u00a0A typical answer may take 30 seconds to two minutes to explain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communicate effectively.<\/strong> \u00a0Speak clearly and enthusiastically about your experiences. \u00a0Listen carefully in order to\u00a0effectively and appropriately answer the questions being asked and to learn as much as possible about the position. \u00a0Be positive about prior experiences, employers, former supervisors, college experiences, even your weaknesses. \u00a0When describing a bad experience focus on the facts (not your feelings) and be brief.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Silence is okay.<\/strong> \u00a0Those pauses may seem longer to you than to the interviewer. \u00a0A pause before answering a question enables you to organize your thoughts and present a\u00a0concise answer. \u00a0If you are unsure about a question, always ask for clarification before answering the question. \u00a0When you have finished answering a question, stop, don&#8217;t ramble on endlessly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch your body language and nonverbal communication.<\/strong> \u00a0Maintain good eye contact, don&#8217;t slouch, appear interested&#8211;not bored and control any nervous habits (fidgeting, drumming fingers, etc.) \u00a0Your voice quality also demonstrates your confidence&#8211;speak clearly. \u00a0Have good personal hygiene, do not wear too much make-up, jewelry or cologne\/perfume. \u00a0Pay attention to the details&#8211;polished shoes, professional hair style, clean nails, fresh breath, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social etiquette and small talk skills are important.<\/strong> \u00a0Be prepared to engage in small talk at the beginning of the interview. \u00a0Your conversational skills are part of that first impression. \u00a0Also, you may be invited to lunch or dinner as part of the interview. \u00a0The meal is a significant part of the interview especially if your social skills are being evaluated as part of the hiring decision.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expect the unexpected. <\/strong>\u00a0During the interview, you may be asked some unusual questions. \u00a0Often times the employer is simply seeing how you react to the question.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Qualities Employers Seek in Job Candidates.<\/strong><b> \u00a0<\/b> Employers typically are looking for individuals who possess\u00a0a pattern of success (academic accomplishments, leadership qualities, activities;) strong grades, written and oral communication skills; related work experience; interpersonal skills; leadership potential; decision making and problem solving skills; creativity and intelligence; flexibility; initiative\/innovation; enthusiasm and positive outlook; self-confidence; polished personal style, honesty and integrity; ability to get along with others&#8211;a team player; and good work ethic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arrive early. \u00a0Plan to arrive for your interview 10-15 minutes early. \u00a0If you arrive earlier than that, go for a\u00a0walk, get a cup of coffee, drive around the block, or sit in the lobby. \u00a0Arriving too early may create an awkward situation and arriving late definitely creates a bad first &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2188,"parent":1749,"menu_order":2,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-1755","page","type-page","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","column","threecol","has-thumbnail"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Interview Guidelines Kaye\/Bassman Recruiting<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Interview Guidelines by top recruiting firm, Kaye\/Bassman International.
