Tomorrow, Jay Leno, 63, will end his reign at\u00a0The Tonight Show<\/em>\u00a0and hand over the job to Jimmy Fallon, 39. In a\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0with Leno, Steve Kroft described it as part of a shift beginning to affect millions of\u00a0boomers being pushed aside<\/a>\u00a0to make way for a younger generation. \u201cThe inevitable changing of the guard that reflects a change in taste, sensibilities and values,\u201d said Kroft.<\/p>\n

Pushed Out While Still On Top<\/p>\n

Inevitable? Absolutely. Every business should have a talent succession plan in place. But what makes this case troubling to some is that Leno, who loves the job he\u2019s had for 22 years (aside from the brief Conan O\u2019Brien era) and would prefer to stay, is being pushed out at the top of his game. He\u2019s the late-night ratings leader and dominant in every demographic group, including younger viewers.<\/p>\n

While the particulars of Leno\u2019s fame and fortune are exceptional \u2014 he\u2019s reportedly receiving $15 million for exiting before his contract expires in September \u2014 his\u00a0Tonight Show<\/em>\u00a0departure offers lessons for everyone approaching retirement age on how to leave a beloved job with grace and dignity.<\/p>\n

Here are six key takeaways:<\/p>\n

1. Don\u2019t trash-talk your employer.\u00a0While we can\u2019t know what Leno has said about NBC behind closed doors, in public, he\u2019s been all smiles. \u201cIt\u2019s been a wonderful job, but this is the right time to leave,\u201d Leno just\u00a0told Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0television writer Lynn Elber.<\/p>\n

This despite the fact that it\u2019s the second time NBC has pushed him out and replaced him with younger talent (after the network replaced him with O\u2019Brien in 2009, it asked him back less than a year later).<\/p>\n

When pressed by Kroft to vent his outrage at NBC, Leno refused to take the bait. \u201cI\u2019m not bitter, not upset,\u201d he said. \u201cNBC has been more than fair. These are tough things and you know, you have to step back and go, \u2018Look, you\u2019re getting a little old for this now.\u2019 And that\u2019s where I am. So I\u2019ll try something else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leno\u2019s attitude is an important reminder to never publicly bash your employer, no matter how well deserved. While doing so might make you feel better, it only serves to make everyone else around you uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

2. Acknowledge your limitations.\u00a0There\u2019s something distinctly unsavory about watching a one-time star struggling to\u00a0remain relevant<\/a>\u00a0after his or her prime has passed. (Paging Norma Desmond.) While Leno is clearly not yet at that point, he recognizes that the \u201crelevancy clock\u201d is ticking.<\/p>\n

Leno told Kroft that when he saw Jimmy Fallon doing a dance number with Justin Timberlake, he thought, \u201cI can\u2019t do that.\u201d He also conceded struggling to keep up with social media and pop culture, laughing when he couldn\u2019t recall the name of Justin Bieber\u2019s latest hit.<\/p>\n

In Leno\u2019s industry, the cool factor counts. In yours, a lack of technology skills or physical stamina might lurk as a ticking time bomb.<\/p>\n

3. Spread the light as you pass the torch.\u00a0It\u2019s easy to hold a grudge against the person replacing you, but Leno has gone out of his way to praise Fallon publicly at every turn. \u201cI thought Jimmy has been especially gracious and polite,\u201d Leno told Kroft. Leno even teamed up with Fallon to film a spoof making fun of all the late-night rumors.<\/p>\n

Paving the way for your successor is not only a nice thing to do, it\u2019s the\u00a0righ<\/em>t thing to do. As OgilvyOne\u2019s Brian Fetherstonhaugh\u00a0told Next Avenue<\/a>: \u201cWithin an organization there\u2019s a responsibility for passing on your knowledge \u2014 and sometimes your relationships \u2014 to make sure the place you move on from is in at least as good a shape as when you found it.\u201d\u00a0To his credit, Fallon has been publicly kind to Leno, expressing his admiration.<\/p>\n

Appearing on Leno\u2019s show Monday night, Fallon read a \u201cthank you note\u201d to Leno which said: \u201cFor carrying on the proud tradition of\u00a0The Tonight Show<\/em>\u00a0host with such humor and class, and for being nothing but gracious and generous to me over the past years. I will do my best to make you proud, every night. Thank you.\u201d (Fallon then made a huge faux pas, however, asking the band: \u201cWhat are you guys up to in two weeks?\u201d When the show moves to New York, its 164 staffers will effectively lose their jobs, though they\u2019ve been encouraged to apply for new ones.)<\/p>\n

4. Keep it in perspective. If you\u2019re shown the door before you think it\u2019s your time, try to understand your employer\u2019s situation. That\u2019s especially true if you\u2019re a highly compensated employed who, on balance, has been treated well.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think I should be angry or bitter?\u201d Leno asked Kroft when pressed about his true emotions. \u201cI mean what you\u2019re saying applies if you\u2019re making $27,000 as a Wal-Mart manager and you get fired. But you know when you make the type of money you make in show business, just shut up and don\u2019t complain.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Prepare for the possibility that you might \u201cget screwed.\u201d Leno told Kroft: \u201cI always tell new people in show biz that show biz pays you a lot of money because eventually at some point you\u2019re going to get screwed.\u201d Even if you\u2019re not in show business, Leno\u2019s advice to save and plan for the future is wise. This way, you\u2019ll be ready financially if your exit happens earlier than you\u2019d hoped.<\/p>\n

6. Start planning your post-retirement gig earlier rather than later.\u00a0The day after Leno leaves\u00a0Tonight<\/em>, he has a standup show booked in Sarasota, Fla. Last year, on top of his\u00a0<\/em>late-night\u00a0<\/em>duties, he performed live more than 100 times.<\/p>\n
