Try These 5 Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Talent shortages get a lot of press these days, but\u00a0we should not forget that, despite all the talk about dwindling numbers of candidates, there are still plenty of job seekers\u00a0out there who find it hard to get\u00a0interviews.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s well documented\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2014\/08\/25\/hiring-bias-against-the-unemployed-should-there-be-a-law\" rel=\"nofollow\">that unemployed applicants<\/a> find it much harder to get jobs than their employed counterparts do.\u00a0It can also be a struggle for people returning from\u00a0extended career breaks. Meanwhile, ageism is making it hard for older workers to get interviews, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, many first-time job seekers face\u00a0similar problems.<\/p>\n<p>To help these embattled applicants break down the walls\u00a0that are keeping them out of the interview room,\u00a0I\u2019d like to offer the five following tips:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0Build Your Social Media Presence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of you may rail against this piece of advice, but the fact is that social media is \u2013 or will soon be \u2013 the No. 1 candidate research tool\u00a0for recruiters. We\u2019re now at the point that employers discriminate against those applicants who don\u2019t have social media profiles:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.careerbuilder.com\/share\/aboutus\/pressreleasesdetail.aspx?sd=5\/14\/2015&amp;id=pr893&amp;ed=12\/31\/2015\" rel=\"nofollow\">according to CareerBuilder,<\/a>\u00a035 percent of employers are less likely to interview applicants whom they can\u2019t find online.<\/p>\n<p>So, it\u2019s official: If you don\u2019t have a social media presence, you are\u00a0hindering your own job search.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Lower Your Sights a Little<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Take a look at all the roles you\u2019ve applied to. Are you truly qualified for all of them?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to\u00a0stretch yourself and apply for roles just outside your comfort zone,\u00a0but you do need to be realistic. Excepting certain extenuating circumstances, applying for jobs well beyond your reach is a very flawed strategy, because the competition will always be more qualified than you.<\/p>\n<p>If, after\u00a0taking an honest look at your applications, you realize that you are aiming too high, then it\u2019s time to reorient yourself. Start applying to jobs that you are more clearly suitable for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0Be More Selective<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are not getting interviews, it\u2019s worth looking at how you are selecting the jobs to which you apply.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re desperate, it\u2019s tempting to hurriedly apply for as many jobs as possible. This approach fails on two fronts. First, it causes you to spend a lot of time on applications with exceedingly low chances of succeeding. Second, it often means that you\u2019re not spending as much time as you should on the applications that may actually help you land a job.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re\u00a0struggling to get interviews, you might want to get more selective about which jobs you decide to apply to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0Tailor Your Applications<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5215 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kbicblog.com\/blog\/higher-education\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2016\/05\/resume2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Not Getting Job Interviews? Try These 5 Things\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Are you already highly selective of the jobs you apply to? Then your problem may be that you\u2019re not selling yourself well enough.<\/p>\n<p>It needs to be immediately obvious to potential employers that you are a good fit for their companies. That\u2019s why it\u2019s vital that you take\u00a0your time when applying to companies. Instead of sending off your CV\u00a0immediately, first, identify the three or four qualities that make you a great fit, and then emphasize them in your CV.<\/p>\n<p>By tailoring your CV\u00a0in this way, you\u2019ll better align yourself with what employers are looking for, thereby increasing your chances of getting to the interview stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Get a Recommendation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/28\/business\/employers-increasingly-rely-on-internal-referrals-in-hiring.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Research tells us that you are twice as likely to be invited<\/a> for an interview if you are referred to the business by an influential person.
