We break down the statistics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The odds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pluck.ama-assn.org\/static\/images\/store\/2\/1\/02e997cb-84a1-48b1-81ba-d2d6fedb8130.Large.png?1\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"By the Numbers: Specialty Preferences Before and After Med School\" src=\"http:\/\/pluck.ama-assn.org\/static\/images\/store\/2\/1\/02e997cb-84a1-48b1-81ba-d2d6fedb8130.Large.png?1\" alt=\"By the Numbers: Specialty Preferences Before and After Med School\" width=\"358\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a>Chances are you will end up in a different medical specialty than the one you had picked out when you first set foot on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Just 1 in 4 medical school graduates ended up in the same specialty they picked the summer before they started medical school, according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/data\/448476\/a1table.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">report<\/a> from the Association of American Medical Colleges. That statistic is based on information from 10,353 students who indicated a specialty preference on the 2015 Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) and participated in the Matriculating Student Questionnaire (MSQ) they were invited to complete the summer before the first year of medical school.<\/p>\n<p>Slightly more than one-half of the students who indicated a preference on the MSQ ended up in a different specialty than the one reported before gross anatomy and clinical rotations, the data showed. Another 15 percent were undecided when they took the MSQ, while 7 percent of the students had no MSQ response.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specialties with staying power<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Orthopaedic surgery and its subspecialties had the highest percentage of students who initially indicated they planned to pursue that field, the data showed. Among the 2015 graduates going into a residency for orthopaedic surgery or a subspecialty, 53.6 percent had said that was what they wanted to pursue when they began medical school.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the top five specialties with the highest percentage of graduates pursuing their initial preference were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pediatrics or a subspecialty: 37.7 percent<\/li>\n<li>Neurological surgery: 33.1 percent<\/li>\n<li>Emergency medicine or a subspecialty: 31.8 percent<\/li>\n<li>Family medicine or a subspecialty: 31.6 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among the 2,033 going into internal medicine or a subspecialty, 26.3 percent initially said they wanted to pursue that specialty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pluck.ama-assn.org\/static\/images\/store\/13\/2\/bdbbe657-67dc-40a1-a2a6-4b7cb7da8098.Large.png?1\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"By the Numbers: Specialty Preferences Before and After Med School\" src=\"http:\/\/pluck.ama-assn.org\/static\/images\/store\/13\/2\/bdbbe657-67dc-40a1-a2a6-4b7cb7da8098.Large.png?1\" alt=\"By the Numbers: Specialty Preferences Before and After Med School\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>New specialty picks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Internal medicine\/pediatrics had the largest percent of students who indicated a different specialty before they started medical school, with 78.9 percent thinking they would pursue a different field.
