\"Ten<\/a>It would be awful if your job search<\/a> were being hindered by something in your resume<\/a> \u2014 something that might scare employers away.<\/p>\n

It is hard to read your own resume with a critical eye. You know yourself too well. It\u2019s hard to get perspective on your own background.<\/p>\n

Pick an honest and forthright friend to review your resume for you, and ask them to tell you what they think of it.<\/p>\n

Your resume might be scaring employers away. If you are applying for lots of job openings but you aren\u2019t hearing anything back, this could be your problem. How would you know?<\/p>\n

They never tell you \u201cHere\u2019s the problem we ran into when we reviewed your resume.\u201d They just go silent, and you keep using the same resume over and over.<\/p>\n

Here are ten ways your resume may be scaring employers away:<\/p>\n

10. Lots of short-term jobs in a row (with no explanation)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

9. Non-traditional, zigzag career path, unexplained<\/strong><\/h3>\n

8. Precipitous drops in altitude (e.g., a switch from an executive-level job to a nearly entry-level job)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

7. Your formal education doesn\u2019t match your career history<\/strong><\/h3>\n

6. Long-term or multiple employment gaps (periods of unemployment)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

5. No obvious intersection between your resume and the job specification<\/strong><\/h3>\n

4. Lots of typos and misspellings in your resume<\/strong><\/h3>\n

3. Industry jargon from a different industry<\/strong><\/h3>\n

2. You\u2019re a non-local job candidate (and you don\u2019t explain why)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

1. You\u2019ve been a manager in the same function as the non-management job you\u2019re applying for now (screeners will wonder \u201cWhy does this applicant want to take a step down?\u201d)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

People who review and forward resumes are not typically senior. They may feel that they can\u2019t put forward a candidate who has even one resume \u201cblemish.\u201d<\/p>\n

They may feel that they could get in trouble, lose brownie points or even lose their jobs if they recommend an unsuitable candidate for hire.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s one reason resume screeners are often so timid. They seem to care much more about a job candidate\u2019s match to the job spec (that is, a clerical match) than to the candidate\u2019s actual story, their history or their accomplishments.<\/p>\n
