LinkedIn has become the preeminent professional networking site amassing\u00a0 nearly 260 million users in 200 countries\u2014and accomplishing all of this in just\u00a0 under 11 years (for context, Google, founded in 1998, is older). Most people\u00a0 know by now how important a well-maintained LinkedIn profile can be to their\u00a0 career. Here are some thoughts on what kinds of things you should include\u00a0 when creating the work history section of your LinkedIn profile\u2026<\/p>\n

LinkedIn: What To Include In Your Work History<\/h2>\n

An important thing to keep in mind is that your LinkedIn profile isn\u2019t really\u00a0 written for you. It should be written with the potential audience in\u00a0 mind (i.e. recruiters, hiring managers, and other professionals looking to\u00a0 do business with you).<\/p>\n

Focus on making sure that the information that is most relevant to your\u00a0 audience is available, well organized, and close to the top of your profile.\u00a0 Making this information easy to find increases the odds that you\u2019ll get the call\u00a0 for that job or that business opportunity you\u2019ve always wanted. Consider\u00a0 including the following when filling out your LinkedIn work history section:<\/p>\n

Professional Positions<\/h4>\n

This is the most obvious suggestion, since this is what this section is\u00a0 primarily intended for. Be sure to include company names, dates, titles,\u00a0 locations, and also consider providing an update if a company name changes due\u00a0 to acquisition or merger. Include a brief description of your responsibilities\u00a0 along with a bulleted list of 3-4 accomplishments\u2014just as you would on your\u00a0 resume.<\/p>\n

Volunteer Roles<\/h4>\n

LinkedIn now has a section devoted exclusively to volunteer information, but\u00a0 you can and may want to consider incorporating volunteer positions into your\u00a0 main profile, particularly those that showcase leadership skills (especially if\u00a0 you are in transition and actively engaged in a search).<\/p>\n

Internships<\/h4>\n

Make sure to include internship positions, especially if you\u2019re early in your\u00a0 career and they are relevant either to the field you\u2019re in or the field you hope\u00a0 to enter.<\/p>\n

Contract\/Temporary Positions<\/h4>\n

Don\u2019t overlook the value of including temporary or contract roles,\u00a0 particularly if you are an active job seeker. For one thing, they show\u00a0 recruiters and potential employers that you are active and keeping your skills\u00a0 sharp.<\/p>\n

A best practice is to focus on the most recent 10-15 years of your career,\u00a0 since this is the information that is most relevant to who you are now in a\u00a0 professional sense, and also the information that employers will be most\u00a0 interested in. Because you\u2019re not limited in length, however, you have a little\u00a0 more latitude to include a few details that you\u2019ve dropped from your resume do\u00a0 to space concerns. The caveat is that these elements still have to add\u00a0 value.<\/p>\n

Also, don\u2019t overlook the value of keywords. You want to include the keywords\u00a0 that are relevant to your work history and career, but resist the temptation to \u2018overstuff\u2019 your profile with keywords\u2014use them where they make sense.\u00a0 The\u00a0 most effective LinkedIn profiles do a good job of showcasing your traditional\u00a0 resume while also supplementing that with the most relevant additional\u00a0 content.<\/p>\n
