Aliera Health Insurance

Compliance Issues

Aliera Healthcare comes under fire after selling health insurance in Texas without a proper license. This Georgia-base firm is a religious “health-sharing ministry” with about 100,000 customers nationwide.

In the past, Healthcare Sharing Ministries have been considered scams. They do not take on any risks, make guarantees, or use actuaries. They are considered ACA non-compliant and free of regulations making them even riskier to customers.

The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) is requesting a restraining order and injunction on the company that may be operating illegally, which excludes them from accepting new customers in Texas. About 17,000 customers in Texas are left wondering what this means for their insurance plans.

What now?                                                                   Photo by rawpixel.com from Pexels, health care

Aliera is considered “for-profit” and therefore cannot qualify for a health sharing ministry. It is now doing damage control by sharing their side to what happened. They are offering resources for past customers to find other health care options moving forward.
