Gender Imbalance in the Workplace
Lloyd’s Culture Survey
There has been a multitude of sexual harassment reports that have come out of Lloyd’s of London insurance this past year. In light of that, Lloyd’s has just released the results of a culture survey it sent out to employees in March.
Just this year there was evidence that 18 women were subjected to sexual harassment. Additionally, out of 6,000 people who responded to the survey, 480 people said they have witnessed or experienced it. As one of the oldest insurance brokerages in the industry, Lloyd’s prides itself on having an even gender balance on lower level employees. Unfortunately, as the position becomes more senior, only 34% of top leaders are women.
Equal Opportunity
1 in 5 people on the survey said they do not think everyone has equal opportunities within the company. Because of this, Lloyd’s has promised to institute multiple solutions to the problem, such as “gender balance plans”, but what else could companies facing similar problems do to ensure equality in the workplace?
1. Be there. Leaders set the pace of the environment around them through actions and words.
2. Beware of hidden biases.
3. Reward results.
“Each of us today has the opportunity — and the responsibility — to create an environment where our current and future female leaders can achieve their aspirations. Ultimately we want girls — and boys — to know that women are capable of extraordinary things and that none of us should ever put limits on ourselves. Together it’s up to us all to help women reach their full business potential.” – Marillyn Hewson
