And after reviewing everything the job entails, there\u2019s no doubt that it\u2019s a pretty sweet gig.<\/p>\n<p>Pharmacists dispense and package prescription medications to patients and offer expertise in the safe use of drugs. They may also conduct health and wellness screenings and provide immunizations.<\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/pharmacists.htm\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> only projects pharmacist jobs to grow by 3% by 2024, there is an increase in the number of prescriptions filled each year, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=2467552\">Journal of the American Medical Association<\/a>. That means\u2014you guessed it\u2014more jobs for pharmacists.<\/p>\n<p>Although the path to become a pharmacist isn\u2019t an easy one\u2014get ready for six to eight years of school and a state-administered exam to get your PharmD\u2014Rick Moss, a former practicing retail and hospital pharmacist, says it\u2019s an incredibly rewarding career. Monster spoke with Moss, vice president of pharmacy recruitment and staffing at United Pharmacy Staffing, about some of the perks of the being a pharmacist.<\/p>\n<div id=\"wrapper\">\n<div id=\"container\">\n<section id=\"content\" class=\"column threefourthcol\">\n<article id=\"post-3979\" class=\"post-3979 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-candidate-resources category-cv-tips tag-5-simple-resume-tricks-to-get-you-more-interviews tag-get-hired tag-job-search tag-resume-and-cv-tips column onecol\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong><em>Follow Kaye\/Bassman Pharmacy\u00a0on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pharmacy_KBIC\">Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KBIC-Pharmacy-Recruiting-163449634048199\/\">Facebook<\/a>!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>1. You\u2019ll make good money<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even when they\u2019re starting out, pharmacists are practically guaranteed to take home a sizable salary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou start off at a pretty good salary compared to other professions,\u201d Moss says. \u201cThe downside is your income doesn\u2019t really grow from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On average, pharmacists make $121,500 annually, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/pharmacists.htm\">BLS data<\/a>. The lowest 10% earn an average of $89,790, while the highest 10% earn more than $154,040.<\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"http:\/\/kbicblog.com\/blog\/pharmacy\/industry-news\/2016-pharmacist-salary-guide\/\">2016 Pharmacist Salary Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Your hours are flexible<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hours can be very flexible, as pharmacists are typically in demand around the clock. \u2014so you\u2019ll have the option to work second shift, weekends or part-time. In fact, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/pharmacists.htm#tab-3\">BLS data<\/a>, one in five pharmacists work part-time.<\/p>\n<p>But if you would rather do more of a 9-5 thing, that\u2019s an option, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospital pharmacists generally work an 8-hour day, \u201c Moss says, \u201cbut a lot of retail pharmacists work 12-14 hour days. They open and close. That\u2019s how they get a day off.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. You\u2019ll be respected for your profession<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Pharmacists are one of the most highly respected and trusted medical professions. According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/1654\/honesty-ethics-professions.aspx\">2015 Gallup Poll<\/a>, pharmacists ranked as the No. 2 most honest and ethical professionals (behind nurses) and their honesty and ethics were rated as \u201chigh\u201d or \u201cvery high\u201d by 68% of Americans.<\/p>\n<p>And rightfully so. To be a practicing pharmacist, Moss says your record needs to be pristine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s any kind of professional blemish\u2014and it could be as small as not renewing your continuing education requirements or as major as a DUI\u2014the Board of Pharmacy maintains a very accessible database on every pharmacist,\u201d Moss says. \u201cAlthough you can get your license reactivated, that information is out there and is never removed from the database.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When reviewing candidates, Moss says the database is the first thing he looks at.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost all employers will rule a person out if there\u2019s any kind of blemish on the database,\u201d Moss says. \u201cPharmacists have to live a clean and morally-focused life. True integrity is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. You won\u2019t see blood<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If blood makes you squeamish, consider the pharmacy counter your safe haven. Pharmacies tend to be very clean, well-lit and well-ventilated, not to mention neat and organized places.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people who get into the medical field are getting their hands dirty, whether they\u2019re dealing with wounds or bedpans,\u201d Moss says. \u201cPharmacists work in a much more sterile environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. You have options<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The majority of pharmacists (54% according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/pharmacists.htm#tab-3\">BLS data<\/a>) work in grocery stores like Kroger and Walmart and drug stores like\u00a0CVS and Walgreens, but they can also work in a variety of other settings.<\/p>\n<p>In hospitals, inpatient hospital pharmacists prepare more injectable medications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not counting pills; you\u2019re drawing medication with a syringe for IV bags,\u201d Moss says. \u201cThere\u2019s also a much greater sense of being part of something when you\u2019re working in a hospital pharmacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not a people person? Moss says you might want to consider a \u201cclosed door\u201d pharmacy, perhaps in long-term care, like\u00a0OmniCare or Guardian Pharmacy, or a nuclear pharmacy, like Zevacor Pharma or Siemens, where you won\u2019t have to interact with patients.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term care pharmacies are centralized locations that prepare medications dispensing formats, like blister packs, to be shipped for use in a nursing home,\u201d Moss says. \u201cNuclear pharmacies handle radioactive materials primarily for diagnostics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Source: Monster<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why complain when you start your career making six figures?
