Job-Hunting Secrets

Next Level Exchange

“Getting a job is as much art as science, with a lot of luck mixed in … knowing what to do and not to do, job seekers can better position themselves to be found more easily, be assessed more accurately, and get an offer more likely.”

Here are some tips for those on the job hunt:

  • Implement a 20/20/60 job-seeking plan – 20% of your effort should be spent applying for jobs, 20% making sure your resume and profiles are easy to find & 60% networking
  • Take 10 seconds to look over your resume – if the most compelling things on there don’t catch your eye you should look at revising it
  • Don’t focus on the compensation, location, and other benefits of the jobs you are looking at, instead ask about the job and the possible impact on the company to better gauge if this is the position you are seeking
  • Take control of the interview by asking questions – Why is it available? How long have they been looking? What are some challenges and responsibilities or this role?

This is your career and your future, take control of the situation in any way you can. Getting a new job takes practice, patience and perseverance. Following these ideas will increase your odds, shorten the time to get another job, and improve your bargaining power. The key is to proactively lead the process, not follow someone else’s. This is what dancing is all about, especially with a partner who is a bit clumsy or out of step. Source
