Improving Reference Checks

Most hiring managers can agree that reference checking remains a valuable tool in the hiring process but it is typically an inefficient process. Some ways to “improve both the quality of references in general as well as the mode of efficiency in the collection process” include:

Reference ChecksPromote consistent outcomes

Create a list of questions to ask during the reference call. Make sure you are asking the same questions to all reference check calls. Make sure the questions are all open-ended and free of judgment or leading phrasing like in a typical interview fashion.

Perform reference checks earlier on in the hiring process

The sooner you start reference checking candidates the longer and more possible references you will be able to speak with in regards to each candidate. The more information you have the more you can get a sense of personality and intangible aspects of a candidate in which to base your hiring decision on.
