$4 Million Endowed Pediatric Surgery Center of Distinction

I am proud to announce that in 2013, The Women’s Board undertook a five-year, $4 million endowment to support the Nemours Division of Pediatric Surgery at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Jacksonville. Our new Pediatric Surgery Center of Distinction will include a professorship in pediatric surgery, further development of robotics and minimally invasive techniques and enhancement of trauma services.

As such, the division is recruiting a pediatric surgeon to perform research (basic science and/or clinical) in addition to performing the full spectrum of clinical pediatric surgery.  The endowment earnings will allow for protected time and research funding for the successfully hired surgeon.  The position will be named the Albert Wilkinson Professorship in Pediatric Surgery in honor of the late Dr. Wilkinson, the father of pediatric surgery in Northeast Florida.  Dr. Wilkinson had a very strong interest in the field of pediatric surgical oncology and successfully achieved certification for our oncology program by the ACS Commission on Cancer.

Our team includes three physician assistants and rotating general surgery residents who provide full-time front line coverage. Inpatient care is delivered at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, connected directly to our clinic. The 180 bed facility includes a new patient tower, a 20 bed PICU, a 12 bed CVICU and 48 Level 2 and 3 NICU beds, with 24 hour critical care coverage. Nemours is a pediatric multispecialty group with over 100 medical and surgical physicians and psychologists on the Jacksonville campus.  24/7 in-house pediatric hospitalist coverage, 18 pediatric anesthesiologists and all pediatric surgical specialties are represented.

We have extensive experience in advanced minimally invasive surgery including esophageal atresia repair, with two dedicated minimally invasive OR suites, state of the art instrumentation, and availability of the DaVinci Surgical Robotic System. We have comprehensive programs in management of chest wall deformities, pediatric surgical oncology and neonatal surgical care including a highly successful ECMO program.   We are developing an adolescent bariatric surgery program under the leadership of one of our colleagues who also completed a MIS fellowship.  We are considering expanding our surgical offerings to include solid organ transplantation and advanced pediatric burn care.

Academic appointments are available to the Mayo Clinic – Jacksonville, and University of Florida – Jacksonville. Outstanding research opportunities, both clinical and laboratory based exist through both Nemours and our academic affiliates. Research personnel support, financial support and protected time are available for clinical and basic science research pursuits.

Nemours offers a competitive salary and benefits package that includes but not limited to productivity and quality based financial incentives, relocation, health, life, dental, CME,403B Retirement Plan with matching,457 retirement savings plan, licensure and dues allowance, and premium free in-network health coverage for children of full-time employees. The practice and physicians also enjoy a robust EMR system with IT support.

One of the fastest growing areas of Florida, Jacksonville is home to many arts venues, numerous festivals, national and international sporting events including the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars and the Jacksonville Suns AA minor league baseball team, exceptional golf courses and world-class art and culture, and is located on the Atlantic Coast. The annual Players Championship held at the nearby TPC course is an internationally recognized sporting event.  We have excellent public and private schools coupled with a low cost of living and no state-income tax. We are ideally located on St. Johns River within minutes of beautiful beaches.  Jacksonville International airport allows easy access to personal and professional national and international events.

Physicians practice a coordinated team approach by using a sophisticated electronic medical record (EMR). More than forty Nemours specialists from Jacksonville were named among the Best Doctors in America 2011-2012.
