The mission of the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) at UCI School of Medicine is to provide compassionate, high-quality care to our patients; to nurture innovation in research, and to teach patients, families, medical trainees, and ancillary health care providers about lung health, disease, and treatment.

Due to departmental growth and programmatic expansion, the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine is recruiting for a full-time Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist with a strong clinical and educational background to lead the fully accredited, three-year PCCM Fellowship program at UCI Department of Medicine. The Fellowship Program Director, PCCM will be an experienced academic clinician with a strong commitment to clinical training, research, and educational programs.

The PCCM Fellowship at UCI has graduated nearly 100 fellows over the last 30 years. Division faculty members include nationally and internationally recognized experts in the diagnosis and treatment of complex lung diseases and in interventional pulmonology.

Position Highlights:

  • ICU Rotations/Clinical Settings: PCCM Fellows have both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities as they rotate through our three main training sites: UC Irvine Medical Center, the VA Long Beach Health System, and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
  • PCCM Fellowship: Ten (10) full-time fellows are currently enrolled in our combined PCCM program. We matched three (3) fellows for YR 2023-2024 and plan on matching four (4) fellows for YR 2024-2025.
  • Clinical Training: PCCM Fellows initiate and supervise consultative and procedural practices under the guidance of dedicated faculty, allowing them to emerge from the program with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic respiratory and critical care illnesses. Fellows participate in translational research studies.
  • Access to the latest technologies and newest therapies for lung cancer and other pulmonary conditions with collaboration at the NCI-designated UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
  • Innovation in Interventional Pulmonology: Our team is one of the first in the state to perform minimally invasive therapeutic procedures with a specialized airway recanalization and tumor debulking device.
  • Significant funding received, primarily from the Veterans Affairs merit program, California’s tobacco-related disease research program, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Defense.

Key Responsibilities: 
Essential Duties:

  • Oversee the PCCM Fellowship program, including ensuring ongoing compliance with ACGME requirements, managing fellow evaluations, and leading curriculum review and development.
  • Teaching and training PCCM fellows in a variety of clinical inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Providing and supervising direct patient care to treat the full range of lung diseases, including preforming bronchoscopies and critical care procedures.
  • Performing public and University services.
  • Academic credentials, including an active research program is desirable.

Excellent teaching is an essential criterion for appointment. Priority will be given to candidates with a proven track record of academic productivity, as demonstrated through high-impact publications, thematic-based research, and/or grant funding. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience. 

Professional Qualifications:

UCI is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching and/or service to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Upon hire, the Fellowship Director, PCCM must possess:

  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree(s) or equivalent from an approved LCME medical school.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine, and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
  • Satisfactory completion of an Internal Medicine residency and Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship from an ACGME-accredited program by date of hire.
  • Active and unrestricted California Medical License or eligibility for State of California Medical Licensure.
  • Strong interest in clinical teaching is a must.
  • Research and funding, including NIH and/or other federal awards, a prior record of high impact publications is a plus.
