Showing up for an interview without doing your homework is the job seeker’s proverbial kiss of death. There is no quicker way to demonstrate your disinterest in a job than to overlook the importance of dressing professionally, researching the company, and giving some thought to how you might respond to a few commonly asked interview questions.

While there’s no way to know precisely what questions you will be asked, many questions in the interview arsenal are related to one another and touch on a few general topics. According to Gordon Webb, managing partner of the pharmacy practice at Kaye/Bassman International Corp., preparing for all phases of a job interview can help candidates handle the common questions, as well as any curveballs thrown their way.

In answering a question, job seekers should feel comfortable asking for clarity when needed, Webb explained. “I also suggest following up your answer with a question,” he said. “You might ask, ‘Did I answer your question or should/can I elaborate?’ That will give you the opportunity to check that you’ve provided the expected information.”
