Candidates should be eligible for appointment at the level of Associate and/or Professor of Radiology, and qualified for consideration for term tenure. A research focus in neurodegenrative diseases is desirable.

The Division of Neuroradiology interprets over 55,000 studies per year. The Division is currently comprised of nine (9) faculty members. There are two (2) ACGME-accredited Neuroradiology fellowship positions and an “MRI” fellow who devotes 50% effort to neuroradiology. Areas of clinical focus at UMass include:

  • Endovascular treatment of stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • ALS
  • Tay-Sachs Disease and Huntington’s Disease
  • State-of-the-art gene therapy trials
  • State-of-the-art translational research facility for endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disease led by Matthew Gounis, PhD
  • Translational research to cure diseases at UMass Medical School at the Gray-Edwards Lab, led by Dr. Heather Gray-Edwards
  • UMass ranks near the top among public medical schools in the Northeast in the amount of funding awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Federal and private research grants and contracts at UMMS rose from about $2 million in 1977 to more than $246 million in FY 2019, making it one of the fastest growing research institutions in the United States.

The neuroradiology divisions work in close collaboration with our internationally recognized Neurointerventional Division (NIR), which is comprised of four (4) faculty and is supported by a robust NIH and industry-funded research program via our New England Center for Stroke Research (NECStR), MRI research core with a 3T Philips MRI and 7T Bruker small animal MRI, and Image Processing Core lab. In addition, we have close collaboration with both Neurology and Neurosurgery. UMass Memorial Medical Center is a designated comprehensive stroke center, performing over 125 large vessel occlusion thrombectomies per year.

UMass Memorial Health Care is the largest health care system in Central Massachusetts and the Comprehensive Stroke Center for central Massachusetts, covering over 1 million patients. UMass Memorial is in Central Massachusetts and is close to all the lifestyle benefits of New England including Boston, Cape Cod, and numerous other surrounding recreational areas.
