PhD in Nursing Program Director Position Summary

The College of Nursing at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Arkansas and the largest public employer in the state by U.S. News & World Report, seeks an academic-research leader in nursing to serve as the PhD in Nursing Program Director.

The UAMS College of Nursing, ranked among the top nursing programs in the nation, is recognized as Arkansas’ most comprehensive nursing college with several program options. The College of Nursing offers undergraduate (BSN, RN-BSN) and graduate programs (Masters, DNP, and PhD), including the only PhD in Nursing program in the state of Arkansas. The program meets market demands by producing graduates qualified to teach, conduct research, and serve as leaders in nursing and health care.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research, the PhD in Nursing Program Director will collaborate with colleagues in Nursing as well as other academic programs and disciplines across the University to create an effective doctoral and research program. Encouraging new avenues of research is essential to the growth and development of Nursing and the UAMS College of Nursing. We seek a strong research leader in nursing with a powerful combination of vision, energy, and leadership who will embrace and model the patient-centric culture within UAMS.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience mentoring PhD students and junior faculty members to secure extramural grant funding (from either professional organizations, foundations, and federal NIH, etc.). The successful candidate will demonstrate a scholarly interest and focus in geriatrics/gerontology, cancer/cancer survivorship, quality of life, health disparities, social determinants of health, childhood/adolescent obesity/nutrition, and health promotion/disease prevention across the lifecycle. The candidate must have a federal research funding track record. A cross-cutting focus on rural health and health disparities is strongly preferred.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

  • Applicants must have prior relevant experience, such as course coordinator, director, or assistant director of a PhD program in an accredited college/school of nursing.
  • Evidence of effective mentorship of PhD students (i.e., held role of chair of multiple PhD committees).
  • Demonstration of scholarship related activities, including a robust publications record, presentations at scientific conferences, and evidence of extramural grant funding are required.
  • Applicants must hold a PhD in nursing with demonstrated expertise in research and teaching. If not doctorally prepared in nursing, then a Master’s degree in nursing is also required.
  • Unencumbered RN or APRN license with eligibility for licensure in Arkansas. Must also be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
