Section Leader of Classical Hematology Opportunity Description

The Division of Hematology & Oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)/Buffett Cancer Center is recruiting for a Mid-Career, Fellowship Trained Physician highly specialized in classical hematology clinical care and research to lead a sub-section of physicians in classical hematology. The Division consists of 32 faculty members and has a fully accredited Fellowship program. The Section Head of Classical Hematology will be a transformational physician who is well known for clinical research in non-malignant hematology and will enhance collaborations and attract patients for clinical trials with the goal of increasing survival for all patients with blood disorders.

Under the leadership of Dr. Julie Vose, Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology, the Section Head, Classical Hematology will serve as the visionary leader for the Classical/Non-Malignant Hematology Section/Division and will be responsible for providing leadership in convening interprofessional and interdisciplinary faculty to focus on the mission and vision for the division. The Classical Hematology Section Head will participate in the multidisciplinary clinical care of patients and the design and conduct of cancer clinical trials. Classical Hematology Highlights:

  • This leadership position will be 100% classical hematology.
  • Areas of interest could include Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Cytopenias, Sickle Cell Disease and Hemoglobinopathies, Apheresis, Coagulation, depending on the experience and background of the applicant.
  • A record of accomplishment in patient-oriented research in classical or non-malignant hematology is required for the position. In addition, Ideal candidates must have interest and experience in teaching fellows, residents, and medical students.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Enjoy participation in multidisciplinary patient care teams, inpatient treatment, outpatient care, clinical trials, and opportunities for collaboration for investigator initiated clinical research, and translational research.
  • Well-funded; prodigious lab space available with basic science support.
  • External funding for research, education, and public service set a record in fiscal year 2021 with $228.5M and growing. 
  • Clinical Practice Support/Resources: Each physician has a nurse case manager, disease based advanced practice providers, and a disease-based research team.
  • Call Schedule: Faculty members do consults on non-malignant hematology service up to 4-8 weeks/year based on the number of available faculty.

Qualifications for the Position:

  • Applicants must have an MD, DO, or MBBS degree.
  • Board Certification in Internal Medicine.
  • American Board Certification or Eligibility in a Hematology and/or Medical Oncology related specialty.
  • Eligible for licensure in the State of Nebraska upon hire.
  • Academic credentials which merit appointment as Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
  • An on-going interest in clinical care and clinical research for patients with classical or non-malignant disease. Interest in building clinical trials; bridge the gap between research and clinical.
  • Expertise in thrombosis and hemostasis, hemoglobinopathies, and/or cytopenias required.
  • A dedicated leader and mentor to scientists, clinicians, and staff.
