“Families with sick children face so many uphill battles,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor. “By recognizing hospitals that offer the best pediatric care, we hope we can offer families important help when they are going through an exceptionally overwhelming time.”

The rankings are based on clinical data obtained from 183 pediatric centers and on the opinions of nearly 11,000 surveyed pediatric specialists and subspecialists. RTI International, a North Carolina-based research and consulting firm, directed the data collection with the help of more than 100 medical directors, pediatric specialists and other experts, and analyzed the results.

The Best Children’s Hospitals methodology considers clinical outcomes, efficiency and coordination of care delivery, infection control, compliance with “best practices” and resources such as number of nurses and availability of programs for particular illnesses and conditions.
