So you want to change your job function or your industry. As hard as this may seem, it is still possible and we have seen many people do it successfully. All that you require is careful planning and research.
Since you have always been working in one field, recruiters and hiring mangers cannot imagine you in any other. You may be extremely talented but they still doubt that you will be successful in a different role. You need to face all of these challenges and convince them that you are a great choice and will deliver them whatever they want. With that being said, let us see what you can do in this regard.
Highlight all skills that are relevant to the industry
There are some skills which can be used in a number of industries. Highlight these skills on your resume; when you have an interview, mention these skills and convince the recruiters that you have done similar things in the past and will now just have to apply them in a somewhat different manner.
One more thing to note: is there any skill which the recruiters highly demand? Focus on this and somehow link it up to your past experiences. As an example, if you are applying for a managerial position in a different industry, you can always tell the manager that you delegated tasks successfully and allotted resources efficiently even in your previous roles.
Go through your resume
You will have already done this, but now look at it critically. Your resume must tell a story and reflect you as a person whom what you want to be, not what you currently are. Remove everything that is not relevant to the position you are applying, even if these are your accomplishments.
Sounds difficult? We will make it easy. Go through the job description of the position for which you are applying. Note down the keywords; now incorporate these in your resume so that you appear as a potential candidate.
Fill up the gaps
Do you have some sort of experience for the position which you are applying even if your current job is different? If not, an internship can be quite handy and will appear as a relevant experience on your resume. Not only will you be able to polish your skills, but employers will regard you as worthy.
