Ask for a Raise! Here are 5 tips for how to do it the right way.

Asking for a pay raise can be a very uncomfortable task. However, If you have been in your position for a while, putting in a lot of hard work, your wage should reflect the experience and knowledge you have gained. It may be time to ask.

Find the right time to ask

Make sure you ask for a pay rise at a suitable time. Don’t ask for it when everyone’s in the office, instead wait for a time when you’re alone with your boss – or even better – in a monthly/quarterly review session, where you can talk honestly and openly about your salary.

Ask for more than you think you will get

If your boss is a receptive manager, they’ll always work with you and come to an agreement with your salary, usually a mid point. So aim high with your salary, you never know how much you may lose by aiming low!

Get to the point

As mentioned earlier, discussing money can be very uncomfortable. Even more so when you talk in circles and don’t make your intentions clear at the beginning of the conversation. State your case, be direct, concise and to the point. Your boss will appreciate it.

Be open minded

Making money should not be the only reason you do what you do. Consider the perks you get, the job you’re doing and the connections you’ve made. If money is the only motivating factor, there is a good chance you are not in the right position. Really think about the “why” that has moved you to ask for a raise. 

Know what you’re worth

Confidence is essential for negotiating your pay raise. If you know where you stand and that you are in fact valuable to your employer, you will be more likely to get what you ask for. If you feel that you are being paid less than you deserve, and a pay raise it out of the question, it may be time to find something else.
